Hola!
Our next stop was Tarragona; Barcelona’s senior in roman times, Tarragona had some amazing roman ruins, a medieval cathedral and a gorgeous old town. We parked up on the fully lit main esplanade (after utilising the free showers on the beach) and went to bed thinking we were safe as houses. BUT, we awoke at 4am to some punks stealing our bikes off the back of the van. EJ jumped out of the van like lightening and started chasing them down the street!! Lucky he is a light sleeper! They saw him coming and threw the bikes off the 20m retaining wall onto the rocks on the beach. EJ went and got the bikes back but needless to say, neither of us slept much after that! The bikes are a bit wonky now and Thundy now has new piercing to hold the bikes on more securely lol! The next day we drove up the coast a little way and stopped about an hour south of Barcelona. We set up at a massive marina and went for a drink at the beach bar. We couldn’t believe how big some of the boats were here!
We drove into Barcelona early the next morning and had a good look around the city. Barcelona is a fantastic mix of old and new. There are old buildings, monuments and laneways all over this beautiful city, we strolled down La Rumbla, the main boulevard and checked out the boutiques. After seeing some sites along the strip we took the ‘steep train’ up to the gondalas and went to see the castle. The castle is situated on one of the highest points of the city and it boasts some magnificent views! We then ventured to the see the accentric architect Antoni Gaudi’s enchanting Park Gϋell. This park was originally designed to be a self-contained community but the project flopped and we’re left with a Dr Suess-style playground filled with mosaics and Gaudi-designed paths and plazas.
We then caught the metro to Gaudi’s masterpiece, La Sagrada Familia, this cathedral come castle is still a work in progress. Construction on this massive structure started in 1882 and is not due to be finished until 2020. We were totally awestruck by this building, whose highest tower is 170m and it has a very catholic theme. We would have to say that we will find it very hard to forget just how massive this was and will be when it is completed. Lastly, we visited the 1992 Olympic Stadium, which was massive to say the least, we found that it had a great vibe and we could easily imagine how crazy it would have been inside during the events. We loved Barcelona and it’s quirky laneways and were a little sad to say goodbye so quickly. We headed onto Blanes after this and freecamped in another beach carpark J
